Carnage for Kangaroos at Bathurst 1000
WLPA strongly
disapproves of the slaughter of some 140 kangaroos at Mt Panorama by
Bathurst Council for the Bathurst 1000 car race. There have only been
two incidences of kangaroos coming onto the track in the past 40
years of car racing, however public safety concerns were cited as a
justification for this decision.
Local
ecologist and Council consultant, Ray Mjadwesch, spoke out against
the council’s clandestine determination, stating “it is ironic that
Australia’s iconic wildlife has
been shot and its young disposed of in preparation for an iconic
international car race”. Mr Mjadwesch went on to say that “there
could have been kangaroo fencing erected around the track, which is
reopened for wildlife passage after the event”.
A full account of
this issue will appear in the Annual Report.
